The Evolution of Flat Design

Originally a major market disruptor, flat design has been a staple among top brands redesigning logos and looking to redefine their brand identities with the use of the trend-setting design implementation. Personified by 2D illustrations, clean, smooth, crisp edges and bright even monochromatic color schemes – flat design has traditionally been marked by a simplified, digital aesthetic, free of gradients and shadows, choosing to oppose artificial realism and intricacies in favor of simple iconography. In a phase where usability and efficiency has dominated the digital sphere, flat design helped designers and site owners by affording the design a much faster load time as extra elements are not present and elements are streamlined, allowing the faster site to resize and form around the navigation (content, rows and columns) it displays. As the maximalist trend has gained ground over simplicity and minimalism, flat design has been forced to evolve – morphing into […]

Despite being one of the most important components of ecommerce operations, conversion optimization tends to go under the radar. With a focus mainly on product offering, market segment penetration and order fulfillment – attention to the user experience can get left behind. Getting to know the psychology of a web user and getting into the ins and outs of their online journey – is quite another prospect. Overlooking the understanding of one’s user can be a costly mistake. Putting good money before bad, site owners sink investments into SEO, banner ads, social media campaigns and so on, driving users to a site that isn’t optimized for their visit. For an ecommerce site to even have a chance at survival, it must do much more than just look pretty. It must function far beyond first […]

The Hidden Menu and Effective UI

A website design trend that has really taken hold is the hidden menu. This is the application of a site hiding their menu navigation when a visitor first lands on the main page. The hidden menu information becomes visible when the visitor is ready to move on to additional information and clicks on the requested icon. The hidden menu used in the design shown below is a nod to the popular mobile hamburger menu, which is a widely used technique of responsive design. With the rise of mobile use, this UI technique has become an such an intuitive feature for the user that it is beginning to be regularly carried over into the overall design of a site. The hidden menu application lends a great deal for user interface design and usability in keeping the user highly engaged due to the fact that information is  clearly illuminated, not being overwhelmed by mass amounts of initial content.
